5 Facts about Autism that will Blow Your Mind:

1. Autism means alone

The word “autism” is derived from the Greek word “autos” meaning self.  The literal meaning of Autism is “alone.”

2. It is more common than other common diseases

Autism is found to be more prevalent than childhood cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined.

3. Dogs are Autistic-Friendly

Research has shown that dogs are linked to improve the quality of life in autistic children, helping with their aggressive behavior, prompting independence and safety.

4. Autism occurs more often in boys

Boys are nearly t times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ASD.

5. Who is at Risk for Autism?

Children born to older parents are at a higher risk for having autism.  Parents who have a child with ASD have a 2 to 18 percent chance of having a second child who is also affected.  Studies have shown that among identical twins, if one child has autism, the other will be affected about 36 to 95 percent of the time.

 

Why Autism Awareness Month is Important

A. It is the fastest-growing developmental disorder

There are approximately 70 million recognized cases of autism worldwide.  Besides genetic mutation, environmental triggers such as exposures to heavy metals, antibiotics, chemicals, drugs and other unknown causes for developing Autism.

B. Autism has to be accepted with love

The increasing occurrences of autism in the United States is a telltale sign that it is high time the general public is factually educated on the disorder to inspire change and support. This month reminds us to be empathetic, warm, and welcoming to autistic individual and families around us.

C. Early intervention can help tremendously

If we can screen autism at an early age by being aware of its signs and symptoms, we can improve the quality of lives by improving the overall development.
